Fire Table Lounge: 5 Ways to Build Seating Around a Fire Table
Layout ideas · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the furniture shown
A fire table changes how a patio gets used. Evenings run longer, and people stay where the warmth is. The seating around it decides whether that actually happens. Here are five ways to build the lounge, from two swivel recliners to a full reclining sofa, with the heights, gaps and prices that make each one work.
All of our fire tables run on propane (the tank is not included) and are made for open-air patios, decks and yards. Rules for open flames on apartment and condo balconies are often stricter, so check with your building before you buy.

1. Start with a pair and a fire
The smallest fire lounge is two chairs and a table between them. A firepit bistro set is exactly that. Our three wicker sets (Keywest, Newport and Malibu II) pair two swivel glider recliners with a 24-inch round, 50,000 BTU fire table that arrives fully assembled, with a tabletop lid and glass beads included; the Huntington bistro set ($2,785) does the same in powder-coated aluminum. A pair fits a small patio, and it ends the nightly debate over who gets the good chair. (We wrote about that one in why couples end up fighting over the fire pit chairs.)
The wicker sets start at $2,527 for the Keywest, which is exactly the price of a Keywest pair ($1,728) plus the Keywest fire table ($799). So if you already own one chair, buying the pieces separately costs you nothing extra.
“After ordering a sectional from Outdoor Nook, we decided to order the Outdoor Firepit Bistro Set too. The set came well packaged, and easy to put together. The chairs are extremely comfortable.”

2. Make it four: recliners in a ring
For a family of four, or two couples who visit often, put four recliners in a ring around the table. Every seat gets the same view of the flame and the same share of the warmth, and nobody is stuck on the end of a sofa. Aim for 18 to 24 inches from the table edge to the front of each chair.
You can build the ring two ways. The Huntington 4-piece firepit set ($5,301) pairs four aluminum recliners with the 39-inch square Huntington table. Or buy two wicker pairs and a 24-inch table: two Keywest pairs plus a Keywest table come to $4,255. One owner did it with Malibu recliners:
“I purchased 2 sets of the Pair of Malibu Wicker Outdoor Recliners to place around my outdoor fire pit, so 4 recliners in all. They are SPECTACULAR!”

3. Put a reclining sofa across the flame
A bigger group needs a bigger seat. Set a sofa on the far side of the fire table and let two recliners take the ends, so the flame sits in the middle of a horseshoe. The Huntington conversation sets are built that way: a reclining loveseat, two recliners and the Huntington fire table in the 4-seat set ($5,133), or a 77.4-inch, 3-seat reclining sofa in the 5-seat set ($6,118). The sofa is roughly twice the width of the 39-inch table, so center it and let the recliners close the curve.

Weighing a bistro set against a 4-piece or a conversation set? Our comparison, Fire Table With Chairs: Bistro Set vs. 4-Piece vs. Conversation Set, runs the footprints and the math.
4. Let the swivel work between the fire and the view
A fire table pulls every seat toward the center, and most patios have something else worth looking at: a garden, a pool, the last of the sunset. Swivel recliners let each person choose. Face the flame while the group talks, turn toward the yard when it quiets down, and turn back without moving the chair.
“…The ability to swivel and recline allows guests to enjoy the conversations in more than one area.”
The swivel also solves the footrest. On our wicker recliners the footrest reaches 19.5 inches past the front of the seat, so at an 18 to 24 inch gap it would meet the table edge. Sit upright facing the fire, then turn the chair a little off-center, or pull it back, before you recline. Fully reclined, a wicker chair is about 67 inches long and the Huntington about 64.5. Our fire table and recliner fit guide has the full layout numbers.
5. Use the fire table as the table
With the lid on, a fire table is simply a table for drinks, plates and a book. Height is what makes that work. The 24-inch wicker tables are 22.8 inches tall: about 2.4 inches below the wicker recliner’s arm and 2.7 inches above its seat, so a glass is within easy reach. The Huntington table (25.6 inches) sits level with the Huntington arm (25.5 inches), and its locking cabinet hides the propane tank.
Once the lid comes off and the flame is lit, drinks belong somewhere else. A side table ($269) beside each chair keeps them off the burner surround. One more tip from an owner: test the igniter when the table arrives.
“Fire pit works great and easy to assemble. The battery included in the box was dead, but switched it out and worked great.”

Before you light it: keep flame and fabric apart
Whatever the layout, the distances from the house, an overhang, a railing or the furniture come from the fire table’s manual and your local rules, so start there. Then a few habits apply to every setup:
- Plan for the footrest, not the seat. A reclined chair is much longer than an upright one. Place each recliner so the footrest, fully out, stays clear of the flame.
- Stow the covers first. Zip each recliner’s built-in cover into its pouch before you light the table, and keep throws and blankets off the tabletop.
- Lid on only when it’s cool. Turn the flame off and let the table cool before the lid goes back on.
- Stay with it. Never leave a lit fire table unattended, and check local codes, HOA and burn rules before the first night.
