Fire Table + Recliner Fit: Table Height, Reach and Footrest Clearance
Fit guide · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the furniture shown
A fire table is a coffee table with a flame in the middle. Get the height, the reach and the footrest right and you’ll sit there all evening. Get them wrong and you’re standing up for every sip, or watching your feet hover over the burner when you lean back.
This guide covers one pairing only: recliners and a fire table. It gives the numbers that decide where the tabletop sits against your arm, how far out to put the seats, and how to recline without pointing your feet at the flame. For side tables, sofas and general layouts, see Recliner layouts: side tables, fire tables and a sofa.

1. Table height: below the arm, above the seat
Next to a recliner, the most comfortable tabletop sits between the seat and the arm. That keeps the flame below face height when you sit back, and still lets you set a mug down without bending. Here is how our tables line up with our chairs, from the size charts on the product pages:
- 24-inch wicker tables (Keywest, Newport, Malibu II), 22.8 in tall. That is 2.4 inches below the 25.2-inch arm of the wicker recliners and 2.7 inches above their 20.1-inch seat. Drinks are within reach from the seat.
- Huntington aluminum table, 25.6 in tall. Level with the 25.5-inch arm of the Huntington recliner, so the 39 x 39 inch slatted top reads as an extension of the armrest.
- Mixing them works too. Huntington chairs with a wicker table: the top is 2.7 inches below their arm and 2.3 inches above their 20.5-inch seat. Wicker chairs with the Huntington table: the top is 0.4 inches above the arm.
2. Reach: 18 to 24 inches from seat to table
Our clearance and cushion safety guide sets the comfort ring at 18 to 24 inches from the table edge to the front of the seat, with your manual’s minimum clearance always coming first. At 18 inches the rim is a short lean forward. At 24 inches it’s a longer reach, but knees stay cooler and people can pass behind the table.
Two things change what “within reach” means. With the flame lit, use only the outer rim for drinks and keep napkins, throws and phones off the top. With the lid on, the whole top is a table: the 24-inch round tables hold drinks and a small bowl, while the 39-inch Huntington top has room for plates. If you eat by the fire, a matching side table ($269) beside each chair is easier than leaning over a flame. And since every chair swivels a full 360°, you can turn to the table to set a glass down, then turn back.
3. The footrest: 19.5 inches that change the plan
When the footrest comes out, it reaches 19.5 inches past the seat front on our wicker recliners and 16.5 inches on the Huntington. Now put that against the 18-to-24-inch ring:
- Wicker, seat 18 in from the table: 19.5 − 18 = 1.5, so the footrest tip ends 1.5 inches over the table edge.
- Wicker, seat 24 in from the table: 24 − 19.5 = 4.5, so the tip stops 4.5 inches short of the edge.
- Huntington: 1.5 inches short at 18 in; 7.5 inches short at 24 in.
Recline straight at the table and your feet end up at its edge, right where the heat is. There are two ways around it.
Option 1: swivel, then recline. This is what the swivel is for.
- Sit upright facing the fire while you talk.
- When you want to stretch out, swivel about 45° so the footrest points past the table, not at it.
- Lean back. With the seat 18 inches from a 24-inch table, the footrest tip now ends about 20 inches clear of the edge.
- To sit up, press the footrest down with the backs of your legs, then swivel back.
Option 2: set the chairs for reclining in place. To keep 18 inches between the footrest tip and the table, the seat front needs to sit 19.5 + 18 = 37.5 inches from the edge for wicker, or 16.5 + 18 = 34.5 inches for Huntington. That works, but at about three feet out the table is no longer within reach and the warmth thins.
Either way, leave about 12 inches behind each upright chair, because the back moves rearward as you recline. Fully reclined, the wicker chairs are 67 inches long and the Huntington 64.5.
Closing the footrest takes a firm push. About 13 of the 583 reviews we analyzed mention it, and one owner sums up the trade-off:
“…Putting the foot rest down is requires a bit of "oomph" at times, but we would rather have it that way than too loose.”
4. Ring sizes for two and four chairs
To size the space, add the table, two seat gaps and two chair depths. For a 24-inch table with wicker chairs at an 18-inch gap: 24 + 18 + 18 + 29.9 + 29.9 = about 120 inches, measured chair back to chair back. Add 12 inches behind each chair for reclining and it is about 144 inches.
| Table and chairs | Seat gap | Across, upright | With recline room |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24-in round + wicker recliners | 18 in | About 120 in (10 ft) | About 144 in (12 ft) |
| 24-in round + wicker recliners | 24 in | About 132 in (11 ft) | About 156 in (13 ft) |
| 39-in Huntington + Huntington recliners | 18 in | About 138 in (11.5 ft) | About 162 in (13.5 ft) |
| 39-in Huntington + Huntington recliners | 24 in | About 150 in (12.5 ft) | About 174 in (14.5 ft) |
Two chairs. Facing each other across the table, the pair needs the “across” length in one direction and, in the other, the wider of one chair (27.5 to 32.2 inches) or the table. Angle them into a V and the length shrinks. A pair angled toward each other is also easier to swivel-and-recline, since each footrest can point into open space.
Four chairs. Four recliners fit around even the 24-inch table with seat fronts 18 to 24 inches out. In our estimate each chair needs a clear swivel circle of about 41 to 44 inches across. With the seats 18 inches from a 24-inch table, each chair’s center sits about 45 inches from the table’s center, so a chair can spin a full turn about 11 inches clear of the table edge, and neighbors’ circles don’t overlap. The 45° swivel-and-recline still works in a ring of four, but the footrest points toward the gap between you and your neighbor, so it’s snug; slide back if you want a long stretch.
Then add a walkway. A 36-inch path around the group turns 144 to 156 inches into roughly 18 to 19 feet across for the 24-inch ring, and about 19.5 to 20.5 feet for the Huntington ring. Our seating guide helps decide between two and four.

5. Fit the sitter, not just the table
The seat is 18.9 inches deep on the wicker recliners and 22 inches on the Huntington. Deep seats are what make a recliner supportive, but about 9 of the reviews we analyzed say a shorter sitter’s feet don’t reach the ground:
“…My wife is 5'6" and she cannot put her feet on the ground when she sits down. The seat is too deep.”
Others simply live with the footrest out, which is exactly when the swivel-first habit matters:
“…My feet don't touch the ground due to my shorter legs but I almost always have the footrest extended anyway.”
If you’re on the shorter side, the wicker models are the closer fit. Our recliner fit guide matches seat depth and height to your height, and how much space a recliner needs covers the full footprint.
