Recliner Layouts: Pairing With Side Tables, Fire Tables and a Sofa
Layout guide · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the recliners shown
A recliner on its own is a seat. Add a table, a second chair, a fire table or a sofa and it becomes a place people want to spend the evening. The trick is leaving each chair room to recline and swivel, so the layout still works when everyone has their feet up.
Here are four layouts our owners use, with the spacing that makes each one work and the sets that match. This guide is part of our Recline & Relax guide.

Before you arrange: the numbers every layout uses
Every layout below rests on three figures from our size charts. Full recline runs 64.5 inches (Huntington, Shoreline) to 67 inches (Keywest, Malibu II). Allow about 12 inches behind each upright chair for the recline. For free swivel, allow a clear circle about the chair's diagonal, roughly 41 to 44 inches depending on the model; that is our estimate, and the working is in How much space does an outdoor recliner need?
1. One recliner and a side table
The simplest layout and the easiest to place: a reading corner, a sunroom seat or a spot facing the yard. Put the side table on the side of your dominant hand, a few inches from the arm, so you can reach a drink without leaning out of the recline. Keep it level with or slightly forward of the armrest, not behind it, or you'll be twisting to reach it once you lean back.
Leave the zone in front of the chair clear. With the footrest out the chair is 54 to 56 inches deep, so a coffee table in front will be in the way.

2. A pair with a shared table
This is the layout most couples land on. Two recliners side by side, one table between them. The table does two jobs: it holds drinks and a lamp, and it sets the gap so the arms don't bump when you both swivel.
“They are attractive, easy to move, the perfect size between the two chairs. They hold a light and have plenty of room for a beverage and a small plate.”
Spacing. Two chairs alone measure 55.1 inches across for Keywest, 55 inches for Huntington, 57.8 inches for Shoreline and Kiesta, 61.4 inches for Newport and 64.4 inches for Malibu II. Add the table's width from its product page, plus a couple of inches each side. Angle the chairs slightly toward each other if you like to talk; the swivel lets you square up to the view whenever you want.
One honest note. Our matching side tables are compact, and not everyone loves that:
“The round table is well made and attractive. It is small and goes well between the 2 recliners. A bit over priced though in my opinion.”

3. A pair facing a fire table
Swap the side table for a fire table and the same two chairs become an evening spot. The difference is direction: instead of side by side, the chairs face the fire, usually at a slight angle so you can see each other as well as the flame.
Spacing. Place the chairs so the tip of the open footrest stays well clear of the table. With the footrest out the chair is 54 to 56 inches deep, so measure from where the back of the chair will sit, not from the front of the seat. Then check the distance the fire table's instructions ask for. Always follow your fire table's instructions and local rules on clearances; on a windy night, sit farther back. Leave about 12 inches behind each chair for the recline and a walkway around the outside.
“I purchased 2 sets of the Pair of Malibu Wicker Outdoor Recliners to place around my outdoor fire pit, so 4 recliners in all. They are SPECTACULAR!”
Our fire pit bistro sets pair two recliners with a matching firepit table. The wicker-collection tables are rated at 50,000 BTU, run on a propane tank (not included) and arrive fully assembled with a lid and glass beads.

4. Recliners flanking a reclining sofa
For a full outdoor living room, put a reclining loveseat or sofa in the middle and a swivel glider recliner at each end, angled in. The sofa faces the view or the TV; the recliners turn between the view and the conversation. Some owners start with a pair of recliners and add the sofa later:
“I purchased two Newport recliners a few years ago and we have loved them so much!!! … So I decided to get rid of my patio sofa and I bought a matching Newport Love Seat.”
Spacing. Give each recliner its own swivel circle (about 41 to 44 inches across, our estimate) so it can turn without hitting the sofa arm. Leave the footrest zone in front of every seat clear, since the sofa reclines too; check the sofa's depths on its product page. A side table between each recliner and the sofa ends gives everyone a place to set a drink.
“We ordered the Malibu set with 2 reclining chairs & the couch. Guests say that the reclining chairs are more comfortable than most indoor furniture and we agree!”
Matching pieces come in every collection: the Keywest Reclining Loveseat ($1,745), the Keywest Three-Seat Reclining Sofa ($2,654), the Newport Reclining Loveseat ($1,867), the Malibu II Reclining Loveseat ($1,887) and the Huntington Aluminum Reclining Loveseat ($1,897).
