Comfortable Bistro Sets: Why a Reclining Bistro Set Beats Café Chairs
Buying guide · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the recliners shown
Search for a comfortable bistro table and chairs and most of what comes back is café seating: two upright chairs, often hard or slatted, around a small dining-height table. That works for a quick espresso. It is less kind to a long evening. A reclining bistro set swaps the café chairs for two swivel glider recliners with a side table between them. Here is what you gain, what it costs in space, and who should stick with café chairs.
It is part of our Small Patios & Balconies guide.

1. What café chairs are built for
A typical café bistro set is designed to be small, light and upright. The chairs keep you sitting straight at a table, which suits a meal. Most have firm seats and no footrest, so after half an hour you are shifting around.
That is not a flaw. It is what they are for: eating, and taking up as little floor as possible. The question is whether that is how you use your patio.
2. What a reclining bistro set includes
Every one of our bistro sets is two full-size recliners plus a table. You choose the table:
- Side table. 18 in square and 20 in tall in wicker (Keywest, Newport, Malibu II). The Huntington and Shoreline aluminum tables are 20.5 in and 20.2 in square, also 20 in tall.
- Wosaic speaker table. A wicker side table with a Bluetooth 5.0 speaker, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, and a 12000mAh battery rated for up to one week of use. It is rated IP65, water resistant.
- Firepit table. A propane firepit table, 40,000–50,000 BTU depending on the model. The tank is not included.
Each recliner swivels 360 degrees, glides front to back and reclines with the footrest out. It has high-resilience foam cushions, a seat about 20 in off the ground, and a weight capacity of up to 300 lbs per seat. A weather cover is built into the chair back and pulls over the cushions in seconds.

3. The lineup and prices
Prices are for the standard fabric. Widths are two recliners with the collection's side table between them, our arithmetic from the size charts.
| Collection | With side table | With speaker table | With firepit table | Width with side table |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keywest (wicker) | $1,997 | $2,407 | $2,527 | 73.1 in |
| Huntington (aluminum) | $2,255 | – | $2,785 | 75.5 in |
| Shoreline (aluminum) | $2,245 | – | – | 78 in |
| Newport (wicker) | $2,077; wicker table $2,135 | $2,535 | $2,655 | 79.4 in |
| Malibu II (wicker) | $2,197; wicker table $2,255 | $2,655 | $2,775 | 82.4 in |
| Kiesta (aluminum) | $2,245 | – | – | See product page |
Sunbrella fabric versions run $2,427–$2,675. Widths for Newport and Malibu II use the 18 in wicker side table.
4. Where a reclining set wins: you stay longer
Comfort is the whole point. In our reviews, owners describe napping (28 reviews), reading (11) and morning coffee (10) in these chairs, the kind of use a café chair does not invite. Swivel lets each of you face the view or each other. Glide gives a gentle rock. Recline takes you from coffee to a nap without moving.
“our porch, which is now our second living room”
The side table is part of the appeal. Five reviews in our analysis praise a side table that fits between two chairs. For a morning setup built around it, see the morning coffee nook.
“a perfect fit between our chairs”
5. The honest trade-off: depth
A reclining set needs more room front to back than café chairs. Our recliners are about 29.9–32 in deep upright, 54–56 in with the footrest out, and 64.5–67 in fully reclined. There is one full-recline position, so plan for the longest number. Side by side, a set runs 73.1–82.4 in wide with the table.
Tape that rectangle on the floor before you order, and see how much space an outdoor recliner needs for clearance behind and around the chair. Our small balcony ideas show six ways to fit two recliners and a table.
“Know that they are big… my feet don't touch the floor”
6. A side table is not a dining table
Our side tables are 20 in tall, about level with the recliner seat. That is the right height for a mug, a book or a phone within reach. It is not a dining table, and you would not eat a full meal off it the way you would at café height.
If you eat outside most days, a reclining set is a second seating area, not a replacement for a dining table.
7. Fire or music: the firepit and speaker sets
The firepit sets put a propane firepit table between the chairs. Our firepit tables run 40,000–50,000 BTU, above what many apartment and condo balconies allow, so they suit a ground-floor patio better. Check your HOA or building rules on open flames before you order. Our post on fire pits for small patios and balconies covers what is usually allowed.
The speaker sets swap the side table for the Wosaic table, which adds Bluetooth sound and charging ports without a cord across the floor.
8. Who should stick with café chairs
A reclining set is not right for every space. Café chairs are the better choice if:
- you mainly eat outdoors and need a dining-height table
- your balcony is shallower than the recline depth above, even with the chairs turned
- you need chairs you can lift, stack or fold away after each use
“unfortunately too large for our tiny patio”
That buyer still praised the return pickup. If width is your tightest measurement, compare a reclining loveseat vs. two recliners before you decide.
