Reclining Loveseat vs. Two Recliners: Which Works Better on a Small Patio?
Buying guide · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the recliners shown
A reclining loveseat and a pair of recliners seat the same two people, and in most of our collections they cost about the same. On a small patio the real differences are a few inches of width, whether the seats swivel, and how easy the setup is to change later. Here is how they compare, collection by collection, so you can choose before you order.
It is part of our Small Patios & Balconies guide.

1. The numbers side by side
Widths are overall, arm to arm. The two-recliner widths are our arithmetic from the size charts, not a product spec.
| Collection | Loveseat width | Two recliners, touching | Two recliners + side table | Full recline, loveseat / recliner | Price, loveseat / two recliners |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keywest | 53 in | 55.1 in | 73.1 in | 65 in / 67 in | $1,745 / $1,728 pair |
| Huntington | 53.1 in | 55 in | 75.5 in | 64 in / 64.5 in | $1,897 / $1,986 two singles |
| Newport | 56.7 in | 61.4 in | 79.4 in | 67 in / about the same | $1,867 / $1,856 pair |
| Malibu II | 56.7 in | 64.4 in | 82.4 in | 67 in / 67 in | $1,887 / $1,976 pair |
Side table widths: 18 in for the wicker tables, 20.5 in for the Huntington table. Shoreline and Kiesta loveseat charts were not available when we wrote this, so check those product pages.
Depth is close to a tie. The Keywest loveseat is 29.5 in deep upright and 65 in fully reclined, against 29.9 in and 67 in for the Keywest recliner. Either way, leave room behind for the back to recline and in front for the footrest.

2. Width: a few inches, until you add a table
Against two recliners pushed together, a loveseat saves only about 2 to 8 inches, depending on the collection. In the Keywest and Huntington lines it is about 2 inches. In the Malibu II line it is closer to 8.
The bigger gap comes from the table. Most people put a side table between two recliners, and that is where the loveseat pulls ahead by about 20 inches or more. A Keywest loveseat is 53 in wide. Two Keywest recliners with the matching side table are 73.1 in.
When width decides it
- Under about 6 feet (72 in) of wall or railing, a pair with a side table will not fit in any collection, before you add gaps. A loveseat or two touching chairs will.
- With more room than that, both fit. Choose on how you sit, not on inches.
- Lay it out first: our small patio layouts by size show both on 6×8, 8×10 and 10×12 plans.
That is simple arithmetic from the widths above. Add your walkway, door swings and turning room.
3. Motion: recliners swivel and glide, the loveseat reclines
This is the biggest difference in daily use. Each of our recliners swivels a full 360 degrees and glides front to back, then reclines with the footrest out. You can face the view, turn toward each other to talk, or turn to the television without moving the chair.
The loveseat does one thing: each seat reclines. It faces one direction, so place it where you want to look. On a small patio, swivel is what lets two chairs do the work of a sofa, as our 5 rules for fitting outdoor recliners explain. Swiveling chairs do need room to turn, so keep them a little off the wall.

“They aren't too large, a perfect size for our porch”
4. Independent recline: a tie
Both options let one person recline while the other sits up. Each loveseat seat has its own recline movement, just as each recliner does. Both use the same steel mechanism, zinc-plated and then e-coated, a two-stage rust-resistant treatment built for the outdoors.
5. Where the drinks go: side table or console
Two recliners leave a natural gap for a side table, and owners like it there. Five reviews in our analysis praise a side table that fits between two chairs.
“a perfect fit between our chairs”
A plain loveseat has no table built in, so the drinks go on a side table at one end. The Keywest loveseat with console adds a 12.5 in console between the seats for drinks and snacks. It is 66.5 in wide, still narrower than two Keywest recliners with a side table at 73.1 in.

6. For couples: side by side or turned toward each other
Couples are the most common theme in our reviews, mentioned in 35 of them. A loveseat keeps you shoulder to shoulder with no gap, which suits reading together or watching the same view. Two swivel recliners let each of you turn, glide and choose your own angle.
“doesn't every sunroom deserve a matching pair of recliners!”
If you are still deciding whether you need one seat or two, read one outdoor recliner or two.
7. Moving it later: two pieces are more flexible
Two recliners are two separate chairs. You can split them between the patio and a porch, move one to follow the sun, or add a third later. In the 38 small-space reviews we read, pairs (11) and singles (9) far outnumber loveseats (2), and at least 3 single buyers came back for a second chair.
“two more were ordered in October for the new balcony”
A loveseat is one piece of furniture once it is set up, so it stays where you planned it. It generally ships one box per seat. The boxes are heavy, so plan on two people or a dolly either way, and read what to expect on delivery day.
8. Price: close to parity
The Keywest loveseat is $1,745 and a pair of Keywest recliners $1,728. The Newport loveseat is $1,867 against $1,856 for the pair. The Malibu II loveseat ($1,887) and Huntington loveseat ($1,897) come in under two of their recliners ($1,976 pair and $1,986 as two singles). Adding a side table makes the Keywest bistro set $1,997.

The verdict: which one to choose
Choose the loveseat if…
- your wall or railing run is tight and every inch of width counts
- you always face the same view and like sitting shoulder to shoulder
- you want a built-in place for drinks (the console version)
Choose two recliners if…
- you want to swivel and glide, not only recline
- you have room for a side table between the chairs
- you may rearrange, move, or split the seats later
