The Most Comfortable Outdoor Sofa: Seat Depth, Back Height and Recline Explained
Buying guide · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the furniture shown
"Most comfortable" is personal, but it isn't mysterious. Whether an outdoor sofa feels right comes down to a handful of measurements: how deep the seat is, how high it sits, how tall the back is, how firm the cushions are and whether you can put your feet up. Here is what each one does, with the real numbers for the sofas, loveseats and recliners we sell, and a simple test you can do at home before you order.

1. Seat depth: the number that matters most
Seat depth is how far you can sit back before your spine meets the back cushion. Too shallow and your thighs hang off the front edge. Too deep and your knees end up past the edge, your feet leave the floor, or you slump to reach the back.
Our pieces span a real range. The Newport and Malibu II reclining sofas, loveseats and recliners have an 18.9-inch seat depth. The Keywest reclining sofa and loveseats measure 20.5 inches. The Huntington aluminum reclining pieces are deeper at 22 inches, and the Shoreline stationary sofa goes to 25.6 inches, which is lounge territory.
A rule of thumb rather than a formula: if you're on the shorter side, or you like to sit upright with your feet flat, a shallower seat usually feels better. If you're taller, or you like to tuck your legs up and sink in, a deeper seat gives you room. One Huntington owner found the recliner deep enough that they sat with a pillow behind them when upright, and loved it fully reclined. Deep seats plus a lumbar pillow is a common, easy fix.
2. Seat height: why some sofas feel low
Seat height is the distance from the ground to the top of the seat cushion. It decides how easy it is to sit down and stand up, and whether your feet rest flat.
Our reclining sofas and loveseats sit at 19.7 inches (Keywest) to 20.5 inches (Huntington). Our modular pieces sit lower: the Malibu II modular loveseat is 18.5 inches and the Malibu II sectional 18.3 inches. That inch or two is noticeable, and owners mention it.
“…The sofa is a bit lower to the ground than it appears in the photos, but we are not tall so it's not a problem.”
Lower seats tend to suit shorter people and a relaxed, lounge feel. If you or a regular guest has trouble getting up from low seating, look at the reclining sofas and recliners, which sit at about 20 inches.
3. Back height and head support
Searches for a "high back outdoor sofa" are really about one thing: resting your head. A low back looks open and modern, but you'll lean on your shoulders, not your head.
Our reclining sofas and loveseats are 43 to 43.3 inches tall overall, about the same as our recliners (43.3 to 43.5 inches). With seats at roughly 20 inches, that leaves roughly 23 inches of back above the seat. By contrast, the Malibu II modular sectional is 27 inches tall overall and the modular loveseat 31 inches. The Huntington stationary modular sofa is taller at 42.5 inches, and the Newport stationary modular sofa is 36 inches.
If napping and leaning your head back matter more than a low profile, choose a high-back reclining piece. If you mostly sit upright and talk, a lower modular back works fine and keeps sight lines open.

Measurements from our product size charts, in inches, as of October 2026. Full recline length runs from the reclined back to the tip of the footrest. "n/a" means the chart doesn't give that figure.
4. Cushions: thick, firm, or soft?
Soft cushions feel great for the first five minutes. Thick, firmer cushions keep you supported for an afternoon and hold their shape outdoors. Our wicker collections use high-resilience foam, and owners describe the result as firm but comfortable.
“Sofa is large enough for sitting multiple adults or lounging alone. Cushions are thick firm, not flattening when you sit, yet comfortable.…”
To be fair about it, some owners find our sofa and loveseat cushions firmer than the recliners. One owner's take after buying both:
“…the most comfortable outdoor furniture I have sat in (chairs are a little more comfy than couch).…”
If you like a plush sit, plan on throw pillows, and expect cushions to soften a little with use.
5. Arm height
Arm height decides whether your elbows rest naturally or your shoulders hike up. Ours run 24.2 to 25.5 inches from the ground. On our reclining sofas and recliners, that puts the top of the arm about 5 inches above the seat height. Check it against your indoor sofa (see the test below): if the gap feels similar, the arms will too.
6. Recline: the comfort multiplier
A footrest changes everything. Our reclining sofas and loveseats recline at the end seats with a manual release, so you can sit upright or put your feet up and lean back. Fully reclined, they reach 64 to 67 inches from back to footrest tip, enough for a nap.
“…I wanted a "couch" that my 6' tall husband could rest comfortably. He loves it & has stretched out & slept on it many times.…”
Our recliners are all 43.3 to 43.5 inches tall, and owners up to 6'4" tell us they're comfortable. For a deeper look at fit in a single chair, see Will It Fit You? Seat Depth, Footrest and Height and The Most Comfortable Outdoor Chair? What 600+ Owners Say.

The at-home test: measure your favorite indoor sofa
You can't sit on an online sofa before it arrives, but you can measure the one you already love. Grab a tape measure:
- Seat height: floor to the top of the seat cushion, at the front edge.
- Seat depth: front edge of the seat to the back cushion.
- Back height: floor to the top of the back. Note whether your head rests on it.
- Arm height: floor to the top of the arm.
Compare your numbers with the table above. If your favorite sofa's seat is 21 inches deep or more, Huntington's 22-inch seat is the closest match. Around 20 inches, look at Keywest. Closer to 19 inches, look at Newport or Malibu II. If yours sits noticeably lower than 19 inches, the Malibu II modular pieces may feel more familiar. Then remember the safety net: if it doesn't feel right, you have 14 days for a full refund and we arrange the pickup.

The honest trade-offs
- Deep seats are great for lounging and tall people, but shorter people may want a lumbar pillow when sitting upright.
- Low modular seats look sleek and open, but sit closer to the ground and don't support your head.
- Firm cushions last and support, but feel less plush on day one.
- Reclining pieces need floor space in front: plan for 64 to 67 inches fully reclined.
