Outdoor Reclining Sofa vs. Sectional vs. Loveseat: Which Fits Your Patio?
Buying guide · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the furniture shown
Shopping for an outdoor reclining sofa, a reclining loveseat or a reclining outdoor sectional usually comes down to three questions: how much floor you have, how many people sit out there on a normal night, and how many of them want their feet up at the same time. This guide compares the three common setups using the real measurements and current prices of the sets we sell, so you can pick by numbers instead of photos.

The three setups
Most outdoor living rooms we see are built around one of these:
- A reclining loveseat (or console loveseat) plus a pair of recliners. Four seats, and every one of them reclines.
- A three-seat reclining sofa plus a pair of recliners. Five seats. The two end seats of the sofa recline, along with both recliners.
- A modular sectional plus a pair of recliners. A stationary sofa built from modules you can rearrange. The sofa pieces don't recline; the two swivel glider recliners do.
Every set below includes two swivel glider recliners, which swivel 360°, glide and recline. The difference is the sofa piece in the middle of the room.
Side-by-side comparison
| Setup | Sofa piece size | Seats | Reclining at once | Set price (standard fabric) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reclining loveseat + 2 recliners | 53" W (Keywest) to 56.7" W (Newport, Malibu II) | 4 | 4 | $3,354 to $3,784 |
| Console loveseat + 2 recliners | 66.5" W (Keywest) to 68.5" W (Newport, Malibu II), with a center console | 4 | 4 | $3,945 to $4,336 |
| Reclining sofa + 2 recliners | 76.5" W (Keywest) to 81" W (Newport, Malibu II) | 5 | 4+ (two sofa ends + two recliners) | $4,279 to $4,769 |
| Malibu II modular + 2 recliners | 76" W × 35.5" D (modular loveseat) to 101.6" W (6-piece sectional with ottoman) | 4 to 5, plus an ottoman on the sectional | 2 (the recliners) | $3,192 to $4,360 |
Depth matters as much as width with reclining pieces. Our wicker reclining sofas and loveseats measure about 29.5 to 29.9 inches deep sitting upright, about 54 to 56 inches with the footrest out, and 65 to 67 inches from the back to the footrest tip when fully reclined. Plan for that full-recline length in front of every reclining seat, not just the upright footprint. The recliners themselves are 27.5 to 32.2 inches wide, depending on the collection, and reach about 64.5 to 67 inches fully reclined.

Option 1: Reclining loveseat plus two recliners
This is the most compact way to get four reclining seats. The Keywest reclining loveseat is 53 inches wide, the Newport and Malibu II loveseats are 56.7 inches, and the Huntington aluminum loveseat is 53.1 inches. Add two recliners and you have a full conversation group where nobody gets the "upright" seat.
It also suits couples who mostly sit out alone together and host a couple of friends now and then. If your patio is on the smaller side, our comparison of a reclining loveseat vs. two recliners walks through the tight-space version of this decision.
“Single best purchase for our beach house. Everyone sits here”
“…I’m truly glad I went ahead and purchased the loveseat and two recliners.”

The console loveseat: same four seats, plus storage
The console loveseat puts a center console between the two reclining seats. On the Keywest version the console is 12.5 inches wide, which takes the piece from 53 to 66.5 inches overall. On Newport and Malibu II it is 68.5 inches overall. You give up a little width in exchange for a separator between two people and a place to keep things.
“…Love the middle section and it is a lot bigger than expected. Lots of storage room in the center.…”
Choose it if two people share the loveseat most nights and like their own space, or if you want somewhere to stash remotes, a throw or a book. Skip it if the extra 12 to 14 inches of width would crowd your walkway.
Option 2: Reclining sofa plus two recliners
Add a third sofa seat and the room seats five. Our three-seat reclining sofas run from 76.5 inches wide (Keywest) to 81 inches (Newport and Malibu II), with the Huntington aluminum sofa at 77.4 inches. On these sofas the two end seats have footrests, so with the recliners at least four people can put their feet up at once. If a reclining center seat matters to you, check the product page for the collection you're considering.
This is the setup for families and regular hosts, and for anyone who wants to stretch out across a sofa.
“…Everyone that comes over and sits on them are interested in buying.…”

Option 3: A modular sectional plus two recliners
A modular sectional trades recline for flexibility. The Malibu II modular pieces are stationary corner and armless units that you can arrange as a loveseat, a sofa or a sectional with an ottoman. The 4-piece modular loveseat set measures 76 inches wide by 35.5 inches deep. The 6-piece sectional runs 101.6 inches wide, with a 35.8-inch ottoman. The two swivel glider recliners in each set are the only pieces that recline.
The sectional also sits lower than our reclining sofas: its chart shows a 27-inch overall height and an 18.3-inch seat height, compared with 43 to 43.3 inches and 19.7 to 20.5 inches on our reclining sofas. That gives it a more open, lounge look. Malibu II modular sofas ship with a separate fitted cover in a carry bag; the recliners have their cover built in.
“…The sectional fits perfectly under our pergola and has completely transformed our backyard into an outdoor living room.…”
“…It looks great on my deck. It is so comfortable. Everyone loves the recliners and how spacious the couch is.…”
Prefer aluminum? The Huntington modular seating groups pair two Huntington recliners with a stationary loveseat (51.3 inches wide by 35.8 inches deep, $3,205) or a stationary sofa (77.6 inches by 35.8 inches, $3,645). For planning a modular layout piece by piece, see our modular outdoor seating guide.

Quick decision rules
- If everyone wants to recline, choose the reclining loveseat set. Four seats, four footrests, and the smallest sofa footprint.
- If two people share the loveseat and want storage between them, choose the console loveseat. Budget about 12 to 14 more inches of width.
- If you regularly seat five, choose the reclining sofa set. Make sure you have the full-recline length (about 65 to 67 inches) in front of each end seat.
- If you like to rearrange, or want a lower, lounge-style look, choose a modular sectional. Accept that only the two recliners recline.
- If you're not sure yet, start with two recliners. Matching loveseats and sofas are sold on their own in each collection, and many owners add the sofa piece later.
