Real Outdoor Living Rooms: 6 Owner Setups With Sofas and Conversation Sets
Owner setups · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the furniture shown
A patio becomes a living room when there is a sofa on it. Recliners make it comfortable, but the couch, loveseat or sectional is what makes it feel like a room you can gather in. We read our owner reviews for the spaces people built around one, and picked six setups you can copy.
For each one: what the space is, what the owner ordered, what they said in their own words, and the takeaway for your own patio, porch or deck.

1. A sectional under the pergola
A pergola gives you a ceiling line to furnish to. This El Paso owner put a wicker sectional under theirs, beside the pool, and it became the place for evenings with friends and family. Their review doesn't name the collection, but it does say exactly what the sectional did for the yard:
“The sectional fits perfectly under our pergola and has completely transformed our backyard into an outdoor living room.”
The takeaway: measure the pergola posts before you pick a sofa, and let the structure set the size of the room. A modular sectional is the easiest shape to fit, because you choose how many pieces go in. The Malibu II 6-piece set lays out at 101.6 inches wide across its corner and armless units, with an ottoman and two swivel recliners to close the circle.

2. A big couch and two recliners on the deck
This Kearney owner ordered the same Malibu II 6-piece modular sectional set for an open deck. What guests noticed is the point of the whole layout: a long couch for sprawling, and two recliners for the people who want their feet up.
“It looks great on my deck. It is so comfortable. Everyone loves the recliners and how spacious the couch is.”
The takeaway: mix seat types. A sectional seats the crowd; the recliners are the seats people ask for by name. Put the recliners at the open ends of the sectional, angled in, so whoever sits there can swivel toward the conversation or out toward the yard.
3. A conversation set for the screened porch
A screened porch is the closest thing outside to a real room, so a matched set reads well there. This owner ordered the Keywest reclining loveseat conversation set in Sunbrella Navy: a two-seat reclining loveseat and two swivel glider recliners.
“Loveseat, recliners were as advertised - colors, comfort, sturdiness, size. … hope to use it in our screen in porch for years to come.”
Their four stars were for a late chair delivery, not the furniture. The takeaway: on a porch you will use for years, the fabric matters as much as the frame. Keywest, Newport, Malibu II and Huntington all offer Sunbrella versions alongside the standard solution-dyed polyester. Sunbrella orders have their own lead time, shown at checkout.

4. Recliners first, the loveseat later
Plenty of owners don't buy the room in one go. This family started with Keywest recliners on a new porch, lived with them, then came back for the Keywest reclining loveseat to match:
“We liked the recliners so much, we bought the loveseat to match. Stylish and comfortable. Perfect for our new outdoor porch.”
The takeaway: if you are not sure, start with two recliners and add the sofa piece once you know how you use the space. Buy within one collection so the wicker and fabric match. One thing to know if you mix Keywest pieces: the Keywest loveseat and sofa sit a little lower than the Keywest recliner (19.7-inch seat and 24.5-inch arm, versus 20.1 and 25.2 inches). In Newport and Malibu II, the sofa and recliner heights match.
Already have Keywest recliners? The Keywest reclining loveseat is $1,745 on its own, 53 inches wide, in Dove Grey or Carolina Blue.
5. A little living room on the patio
This owner bought the full Keywest reclining sofa conversation set, a three-seat reclining sofa with two recliners, and set it up on the patio. Her one must-have was a couch her tall husband could actually rest on. He has, many times. Her summary of the result:
“It looks like a little living room outside & is super comfy.”
She also flagged that the delivery boxes are large and heavy, so she unboxed by the front door and carried the pieces out to the patio. The takeaway: if one person in the house wants to nap outside, a reclining sofa beats a stationary one. Keywest's sofa is 76.5 inches wide, and each end seat reclines.

6. A modular sofa set for the lake cabin
This owner ordered the Malibu II 5-piece modular sofa set, two recliners plus a modular sofa, for a lake cabin, timed for the Fourth of July:
“We ordered it two and a half weeks hoping to get it in time to use at our lake cabin on the 4th. … It is beautiful and so comfortable.”
They noted the sofa sits lower than it looks in photos, which didn't bother them. The takeaway: check seat height if it matters to you. The Malibu II modular loveseat and sectional size charts list an 18.3 to 18.5-inch seat height, lower than the 20.1 inches on Malibu II reclining sofas and recliners. Lower seats suit shorter owners and lounging. Taller owners who want an easy stand-up may prefer a reclining sofa.
