Screened Porch and Covered Patio Furniture: How to Furnish It Like a Living Room
Planning guide · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the furniture shown
A roof changes what furniture can do. Under one, a patio or porch stops being a place you sit for a while and becomes a room you live in, with a sofa, a loveseat or a pair of recliners that stays out from spring to fall. Here is what the roof does and doesn't protect you from, and how to size and lay out seating for it.

What changes under a roof
A roof takes direct sun and falling rain off the table, so owners use living-room seating out there every day.
“We have been using it since November on our covered patio. It is super comfortable, easy to take care of and still looks brand new even with daily use!”
A roof doesn't stop everything, though. Plan for these:
- Humidity. Screens and roofs slow the air, and damp cushions dry more slowly in shade. Mold and mildew are not covered by our warranty, so let cushions dry before you cover them, and run a ceiling fan on muggy days if you have one.
- Pollen and dust. Screens keep out bugs, not spring pollen. It settles on every flat surface.
- Wind-driven rain. Open sides on a covered patio let storms blow in sideways. The seats nearest the open edge get wet first.
- Walls, doors and posts. A porch has fixed edges a backyard doesn't. Door swings, steps and roof posts set the room's real size.
The built-in cover on our swivel glider recliners deals with the pollen and blowing rain in seconds, which is why porch owners still use it:
“These chairs are in our screened patio, so I do love the built-in/hidden cover for those times of year when pollen covers everything.”
Sofa and loveseat covers vary by collection, so check the product page. Malibu II modular sofa pieces ship with a separate sofa cover in a carry bag.
Size the seating to the room
Measure three things before you shop: the clear floor (wall to screen, post to post), every door swing, and the path people walk from the house door to the steps. Then check these numbers from our size charts:
- Recliners are 27.5 to 32.2 inches wide and need 64.5 to 67 inches front to back at full recline. That figure runs from the reclined back to the footrest tip, so measure it from the wall out.
- Reclining loveseats run 53 to 56.7 inches wide; console loveseats 66.5 to 68.5 inches; three-seat reclining sofas 76.5 to 81 inches. Their recline depth is similar to the recliners: 64 to 67 inches.
- Stationary modular sofas don't recline, so their depth stays put: 31.5 to 35.8 inches depending on the collection.
Keep a clear walking path past the seating when it's reclined, not just when it's upright. Around 30 to 36 inches feels comfortable for most people. And leave room for the recliners to swivel; on a porch, that's what lets a chair turn from the conversation to the view.
“These are perfect for a screen porch. The ability to swivel and recline allows guests to enjoy the conversations in more than one area.”
Layouts for long porches and square rooms
Most covered spaces are one of two shapes. A long, narrow porch runs along the house, often 6 to 8 feet deep. A square room is closer to 12 by 12 feet or more.
On a long porch, put the loveseat or sofa against the house wall and the recliners at each end, turned in. Because the recliners swivel, they can face along the porch and recline lengthwise, where they don't block the walkway. In a square room, float the seating: sofa on one side, recliners across or at the corners, a cocktail table in the middle.
| Porch size and shape | Layout | Sizes to know | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long and narrow, about 6–8 ft deep | Loveseat on the house wall, a recliner at each end turned to face along the porch | Reclining loveseat from 53 in wide; full recline 64–67 in from the wall | At 8 ft (96 in) deep, a fully reclined loveseat leaves about 29–32 in to walk past. Shallower than that, keep recliners at the ends where nobody passes. |
| Medium, about 10 × 12 ft | Console loveseat facing two recliners, table between | Keywest console loveseat 66.5 in wide; Keywest cocktail table 43.3 × 22 in | Don't let reclined seats overlap the table zone. Angle the recliners. |
| Square, about 12 × 12 to 14 × 14 ft | Three-seat reclining sofa plus two recliners in a U | Sofas 76.5–81 in; two recliners side by side about 55–64 in | Keep the U open toward the door so the room reads as a welcome. |
| Large or L-shaped, 14 × 16 ft and up | Modular sectional along two sides, recliners closing the circle | Malibu II 6-piece sectional 101.6 in wide | Modular sections can shift slightly; place the sectional against a wall. |
Approximate planning figures from our size charts. Your room's door swings and posts come first; measure them before you order.

Sofa, loveseat, sectional or recliners?
Choose by how you'll use the evening:
- Two recliners are the smallest living room: a couple, coffee, a nap. They fit narrow porches best. Our reclining loveseat vs. two recliners guide compares the two.
- A reclining loveseat plus two recliners seats four, and every seat reclines.
- A three-seat reclining sofa plus two recliners seats five, for families and square rooms. The end seats recline.
- A modular sectional seats the most and shapes to an L, but its seats don't recline. Pair it with recliners.
“We purchased this set for our back porch. … Super comfortable and thrilled that the recliners swivel as well as rock and recline.”

Wicker or aluminum under a roof
Under a roof, both hold up, so the choice is mostly about the look. Our wicker is HDPE resin wicker woven over a rust-proof aluminum frame: Keywest, Newport and Malibu II. Wicker reads warmer and suits a screened porch; aluminum lines like Huntington look cleaner and more modern. On every motion piece, the reclining mechanism is treated steel, zinc-plated then e-coated, so it's rust-resistant.
If the patio is open on one or more sides and catches wind, place the seating back from the open edge. One owner with a windy, open patio told us their stationary couch felt light enough that they wanted to anchor it. Our wicker vs. aluminum guide goes deeper.
Pick fabric that hides the porch life
Covered spaces get daily use: bare feet, pets, snacks, pollen. Owners notice which fabrics hide it. One Huntington owner with light cushions told us darker or patterned fabric would suit outdoor use better. Another went looking for the opposite from day one:
“We’re looking for a set in this material with a fabric that wouldn’t easily show dirt and reclining chairs and this nailed all of the criteria.”
Standard cushions are solution-dyed polyester. Keywest, Newport, Malibu II and Huntington also come in Sunbrella versions, such as Newport in Sunbrella Spectrum Mushroom and Keywest in Sunbrella Canvas Navy. Sunbrella orders have their own lead time, shown at checkout. We don't send physical swatches, so if color matters, call us before you order. Our care and maintenance page covers cleaning.
