Weatherproof Outdoor Recliners: What Survives Rain, Pollen and Wind
Outdoor seating guide · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the recliners shown
Almost every outdoor recliner is sold as weatherproof. In practice, the word covers a lot of ground. A frame can shrug off rain while the cushions soak it up, and a chair can survive a storm but look tired after one spring of pollen.
Here is what each part of a recliner has to survive, how ours are built for it, where the limits are and the simple routine that keeps them looking new.

1. What "weatherproof" really means
No outdoor furniture is invincible. A better word is resistant: the materials are chosen so that sun, rain and humidity do as little damage as possible, and a little care does the rest. That is how we describe our own chairs. Our frames are rust-resistant, and our cover is water-resistant, not 100% waterproof.
So when you compare weatherproof outdoor recliners, ask about each layer separately: the frame, the weave, the mechanism, the cushions and what covers them.
2. Frame, wicker and mechanism: what is underneath
Every one of our recliners sits on a powder-coated aluminum frame. The powder coat protects the finish. Near salt air or a pool, our aluminum Huntington and Shoreline models are the simplest to keep clean.
Our wicker models, Keywest, Newport and Malibu II, add handwoven HDPE wicker over that aluminum frame. HDPE is a UV-stable plastic, so it does not absorb water or rot the way natural rattan can.
The recline, swivel and glide mechanism is steel that is zinc-plated and then e-coated, a two-stage, rust-resistant treatment. Weight also helps in wind. Each chair ships in a box of about 90 to 100 lb, and owners notice:
“The weight of the chairs will keep them in place in a storm, and the built-in covers are wonderful!”
Wicker or aluminum still undecided? Wicker or aluminum: 5 questions that settle it walks through it.
3. Cushions and fabric: the part that needs the most help
Cushions are where weather does most of its damage. Ours use high-resilience foam with quick-dry, outdoor-rated fabric. The seat cushion clips on, so it does not blow away, and its cover zips off for hand-washing.
If your chair sits in strong sun all day, consider Sunbrella. Sunbrella uses solution-dyed acrylic that resists fading, UV damage, mildew and stains far better than standard outdoor fabric. Current Sunbrella versions:
| Model | Standard | Sunbrella version |
|---|---|---|
| Keywest (wicker) | $864 | Canvas Navy, $1,064 |
| Newport (wicker) | $928 | Spectrum Mushroom, $1,124 |
| Malibu II (wicker) | $988 | Canvas Taupe, $1,184 |
| Huntington (aluminum) | $993 | Canvas, $1,203 |
Prices as of October 2026 and subject to change. Sunbrella versions are not returnable, so choose carefully.

4. The built-in cover: rain, pollen, dust and storms
Every recliner has a patent-pending, all-weather cover tucked into a pouch on the back. Pull it over the chair in seconds, cinch the cord at the bottom and fold it back into the pouch when you want to sit. No hunting for a cover in the garage. In our analysis of 635 reviews, 109 praise it.
Rain is the obvious use, but owners on screened porches use it for something else:
“I do love the built-in/hidden cover for those times of year when pollen covers everything.”
“Love the built in covers and they with stood a hurricane on our roof top deck!”
5. Honest limits: wind, straps and condensation
Eight reviews raise a problem with the cover, and you should know what they say. The most common is wind. On an open, gusty deck, a cover can lift off if the cord is not pulled tight:
“The covers don't sync tight enough to stay on in wind. They blow off daily”
Others report a strap or fastener that holds the pouch to the chair arriving torn or breaking after a few months. Another owner on a windy deck saw the upside:
“although the cover has blown off once, because it was attached we didn't lose it!!”
A few tips from what we hear:
- Cinch the cord fully at the bottom of the cover, all the way around the base, before you walk away.
- On a very exposed deck, place the chairs against a wall or railing so the wind hits the back of the chair, not under the cover.
- If a severe storm is coming, bring the cushions indoors. Our care guidance says the same.
- If a strap, fastener or zipper fails, email photos to cs@outdoornook.com. A replacement cover is $70 for Keywest, Malibu and Newport.
One more honest point: in hot, humid weather, condensation can form under any cover and make the cushions feel damp. They usually dry within a couple of hours.
6. A simple care routine
Most of what keeps a recliner looking new is easy. From our care and maintenance guide:
- Cushions: mild soap such as Woolite in warm water, a soft-bristle brush, rinse and air dry. Seat cushion covers zip off; hand-wash only. For Sunbrella, follow Sunbrella's own cleaning guidance.
- Wicker: mild soap and water with a soft brush or sponge.
- Frames and wicker: avoid harsh chemicals and solvents, which can damage the finish and void the warranty.
- Near the coast or a pool: rinse regularly.
- Before covering or storing: make sure everything is fully dry. Mold and mildew are not covered by the warranty.
- Winter: bring cushions indoors to a dry place and keep the chair covered in the off-season.
Do that, and the 5-year frame warranty and 2-year cushion warranty are there for real defects, not for weather wear.
