Box-Store vs. Premium Outdoor Recliner: What the Extra Money Buys
Buying guide · Published by Outdoor Nook, which makes and sells the recliners shown
You can find an outdoor recliner at a big-box store for a good deal less than ours. That is simply true. The real question is what the extra money buys, and whether you will notice the difference after the first season.
We read every price and store comparison in our 635 reviews: 25 mention price, and 22 compare us with box stores, warehouse clubs or other brands. Not all of them say we won. Here is what they said, part by part, so you can decide for yourself.

1. Start with the honest part: you can pay less
Big-box and warehouse stores often carry outdoor recliners and gliders at lower prices, sometimes with a table included. One owner, happy with the chair, still told us this:
“… I was in Costco’s and they had them 2 for the price I paid for my chair. Plus a nice table to go with them. Sad.”
We do not know which chair that was, and we will not guess at its specs. Box stores also have real advantages: you can sit in the chair before you buy, take it home the same day and often return it in person. If those matter most, that is a fair reason to buy there.
If you are buying for the long run, though, check the parts below. That is where prices tend to separate.
2. Frame and mechanism: what is holding you up
Lower-priced recliners vary a lot in what the frame is made of and how it is finished, so ask. Our frames are powder-coated aluminum, rust-proof, with handwoven HDPE wicker on the wicker models. The recline, swivel and glide mechanism is steel that is zinc-plated and then e-coated. Each chair is rated for 300 lb.
One owner summed up the difference after switching:
“I wish I spent $$ on this instead of wasting my $$ on box store sets.”
3. Cushions: the part you feel every day
Cushions are one place where prices tend to separate, so ask about foam type and thickness. Ours use high-resilience foam with quick-dry, outdoor-rated fabric. The seat cushion clips on and its cover zips off for washing. Sunbrella versions start at $1,064 for the Keywest.
“The cushions are very sturdy and do not crush down when you sit on them like so many cheap ones.”
Comfort is mentioned in about half of our reviews. That is the part a store test-sit cannot show you: how a cushion feels after a few hundred evenings.
4. The cover: included, or a separate purchase
Many outdoor chairs are sold without a cover, so check whether you will need to buy one and where you will store it. Every one of our recliners has a patent-pending, built-in cover that stores in a pouch on the back. It is the most praised feature in our reviews, mentioned favorably in 109 of them. It is water-resistant rather than waterproof, and it can lift off in strong wind if the cord is not pulled tight. More in Weatherproof Outdoor Recliners: What Survives Rain, Pollen and Wind.
5. Buying, delivery and returns
This is where buying online is different, for better and worse. Delivery is free by FedEx to the 48 contiguous states: orders take 1 to 2 business days to process, then 5 to 8 business days in transit. Each chair comes in its own box of about 90 to 100 lb, and FedEx delivers to your door or curbside, the driver decides. It is not white-glove, so plan on two people or a dolly to move it.
Setup is the easy part: no tools, the back slides onto the base and most people are done in under 5 minutes. Easy assembly comes up in 37% of our reviews.
Returns: within 14 days of delivery you get a full refund and we arrange a free FedEx pickup. After 14 days, returns are accepted up to 90 days with a 20% restocking fee. Sunbrella versions are not returnable. Read the full returns policy.
6. Side by side: what to compare
Specs vary widely between big-box models, so the middle column is what to ask, not a claim about any one chair.
| What to check | At any store, ask | Outdoor Nook recliner |
|---|---|---|
| Frame | Steel or aluminum? How is it finished? | Powder-coated aluminum, rust-proof |
| Mechanism | What metal and coating? Swivel and glide too? | Zinc-plated, e-coated steel; recline, 360° swivel and glide |
| Cushions | Foam type and thickness? Removable covers? | High-resilience foam; seat cover zips off; Sunbrella options |
| Cover | Included? Where does it live? | Built-in, stores in a pouch on the back |
| Assembly | Tools? How long? | No tools, under 5 minutes |
| Delivery | Free? To the door? | Free FedEx, 1–2 business days processing + 5–8 business days transit, door or curbside |
| Returns | How many days? Who pays to send it back? | 14 days full refund with free pickup; up to 90 days with 20% fee |
| Warranty | Years on frame and cushions? | 5 years frame, 2 years cushions |
| Capacity | Weight rating? | 300 lb per chair |

7. Cost per year: a fairer way to compare
The sticker price is one number. What you pay per year of use is the one that tells you the most. We cannot promise how long any chair will last, but we can show the math over the 5-year frame warranty term alone:
| Model | Price | Per year over 5 years | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keywest (wicker) | $864 | About $173 | About $14 |
| Newport (wicker) | $928 | About $186 | About $15 |
| Malibu II (wicker) | $988 | About $198 | About $16 |
| Huntington (aluminum) | $993 | About $199 | About $17 |
Prices as of October 2026; prices change. The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original buyer, not wear from weather or use; see the full warranty.
Run the same math on any chair you are considering, using its price and the years its warranty actually covers. A cheaper chair that needs replacing sooner can cost more per year. A cheaper chair that lasts just as long for you is the better buy. Owners who paid more mostly say it was worth it:
“They are definitely expensive, but you get what you pay for.”
“Worth the extra money compared to cheaper brands.”
8. Where a premium recliner is not worth it
Be honest with yourself about how you will use it. If the chair is for a few evenings a year, if you want several recline stops (ours have one full-recline position) or if you need to sit in it before buying, a lower-priced chair may be the right call. Shorter sitters should also check fit: our wicker seat depth is 18.9 inches and our aluminum Huntington and Shoreline are 22 inches.
If the chair will be your everyday seat outside, the frame, cushions, cover and warranty are what you are paying for. Our 7 Things to Check Before You Buy an Outdoor Recliner has a checklist to take to any store.
