Outdoor Living Room Layouts by Patio Size: Zones That Work From 10x10 to 20x20

Most layout advice stops at "define your zones." This guide does the math. For six common patio sizes, here is a seating plan built from the real dimensions of our sofas, loveseats and swivel glider recliners, with room left to walk and to recline.

The four numbers that decide every layout
Before the recipes, here are the measurements we plan with. They come from our product size charts.
- Seat widths. Swivel glider recliners are 27.5 to 32.2 inches wide (Keywest 27.55, Huntington 27.5, Malibu II 32.2). Reclining loveseats are 53 to 56.7 inches, console loveseats 66.5 to 68.5, and 3-seat reclining sofas 76.5 to 81.
- Footrest reach. On our wicker recliners and reclining sofas, the footrest extends about 24 to 26 inches past the front of the seat. Keep coffee tables beyond that point, or use side tables instead.
- Full recline. Measured from the reclined back to the footrest tip, a seat needs 64 to 67 inches. The back tilts about 11 inches further than when it is upright, so leave roughly a foot behind any seat that reclines fully, such as a Keywest sofa against a wall.
- Walkways. Around 36 inches is a common rule of thumb for a comfortable path. Plan one from the door to the seating and around any table you will walk past with a tray.
One more: the recliners swivel a full 360 degrees. Leave enough room around each chair that it can turn without hitting a wall, rail or table, and test the turn in your space before you settle on a spot.
Layouts by patio size at a glance
Depth is measured from the house wall outward. "Recline zone" is the full-recline length plus the space behind the back.
| Patio | Seating plan | Width used | Depth used | What's left |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
10 × 10 (120 × 120 in) |
2 recliners + side table | 27.55 + 18 + 27.55 = 73 in | 67 in recline zone | 47 in of width; 53 in in front for a path |
|
12 × 12 (144 × 144 in) |
Reclining loveseat + 2 recliners in a row | 27.55 + 53 + 27.55 = 108 in | 67 in | 36 in for a side table; 77 in in front |
|
12 × 16 (144 × 192 in) |
3-seat reclining sofa + 2 recliners + 2 side tables | 76.5 + 55.1 + 36 = 168 in | 67 in | 24 in of width; 77 in in front |
|
16 × 20 (192 × 240 in) |
Lounge: 81-in sofa + 2 Malibu II recliners + 2 side tables. Second zone behind. | 81 + 64.4 + 36 = 181 in | 67 + 36 path = 103 in | About 89 in of depth for a dining or fire zone |
|
20 × 20 (240 × 240 in) |
Fire lounge: 4 recliners in facing pairs across a 39-in fire table | 27.5 × 2 + gap = about 66 in per pair | 64.5 + 39 + 64.5 = 168 in | 72 in of depth for paths, plus room for a separate dining zone beside it |
|
Long and narrow (10 × 24 ft) |
Two zones along the wall: loveseat set at one end, 2 recliners + side table at the other | 108 + 73 = 181 in of 288 | 67 in | 107 in of length between zones; 53 in path |
Widths use Keywest pieces unless noted: Keywest recliner 27.55 in, Keywest reclining loveseat 53 in, Keywest 3-seat sofa 76.5 in, side tables 18 in. Malibu II sofa 81 in and recliner 32.2 in. Huntington recliner 27.5 in, fire table 39 in square. Recline zones use each product's full-recline length (Keywest and Malibu II 65 to 67 in, Huntington recliner 64.5 in).
10 × 10: the two-chair nook
A 10-foot square fits one zone, and the best use of it is two great seats. Put two recliners side by side with an 18-inch side table between them, facing the view or the yard. That takes 73 inches of width. Fully reclined, the chairs need 67 inches of depth, which leaves 53 inches in front, well over the 36-inch walkway rule of thumb.
If you would rather have a two-seat sofa, a Keywest reclining loveseat is 53 inches wide and needs about 65 inches at full recline. Either way, skip the coffee table; the footrests need that space.
“…We have a small lanai and these big beautiful chairs are oddly a smaller profile than many others we have shopped.…”
For even smaller spaces, see small patio layouts by size.

12 × 12: a four-seat living room
At 12 feet you can line up a full living-room group. A Keywest reclining loveseat between two Keywest recliners measures 108 inches across, which leaves 36 inches for a side table at one end. Face the row toward a TV wall, a view or the house. With 67 inches for the recline zone, you still have 77 inches in front for a walkway.
Prefer a conversation layout? Swivel the two recliners in to face each other at the ends of the loveseat. They turn back toward the view when it is time to recline.
“…These are perfect for a screen porch. The ability to swivel and recline allows guests to enjoy the conversations in more than one area.”

12 × 16: room for the sofa
A 16-foot run is where a 3-seat sofa fits with chairs on both sides. The Keywest reclining sofa (76.5 inches) plus two recliners and two 18-inch side tables comes to 168 inches, leaving 24 inches spare along a 192-inch wall. That is five reclining seats in one row, with 77 inches of depth left in front.
If the 16-foot side is your house wall, this layout faces out to the yard and keeps the door path clear at one end. If you would rather talk than watch, put the sofa on the long side and turn the recliners in at each end to make a U.
“…Love the middle section and it is a lot bigger than expected. Lots of storage room in the center.…”
16 × 20: two zones
Now you can split the space. Give the lounge the deep end: a Malibu II reclining sofa (81 inches) with two Malibu II recliners (32.2 inches each, our widest) and two side tables measures 181 inches across a 240-inch side. With its 67-inch recline zone and a 36-inch path in front, the lounge uses 103 inches of depth.
That leaves about 89 inches by 20 feet for a second zone. Use it for an outdoor dining table, or for a fire table with a couple of chairs. Keep the path between zones open so nobody squeezes past footrests to reach the table.
“…It looks great on my deck. It is so comfortable. Everyone loves the recliners and how spacious the couch is.…”

20 × 20: the fire lounge
A 20-foot square can hold a full conversation group around a fire table. Set four Huntington recliners (27.5 inches wide each) in two facing pairs, with the 39-inch-square Huntington fire table between them. If both sides recline fully, the depth adds up to 64.5 + 39 + 64.5 = 168 inches, which leaves 72 inches for paths. Each pair takes about 66 inches of width with a small gap, so the group fits in one half of the patio and leaves the other half for dining.
Since the footrests would reach the table edge in that math, move the seats back a little further than the minimum. Check the fire table's manual and our fire pit clearance guide for how far cushions should sit from the flame. More ideas: 5 ways to build a fire table lounge.

Long and narrow: porches and side patios
Long porches and side yards work best as a row of small zones rather than one big group. On a 10 × 24 covered porch, put a reclining loveseat and two recliners (108 inches) at one end and two recliners with a side table (73 inches) at the other. That leaves about 9 feet of open length in the middle for the door and foot traffic, and 53 inches in front of the reclined seats.
Depth is the limit here. On an 8-foot-deep porch (96 inches), a full recline of 65 to 67 inches leaves only 29 to 31 inches, less than the 36-inch rule of thumb. Put the reclining seats at the ends, out of the main path, and keep the walkway along the open side.
“…they are perfect for entertaining friends or simply turning around to take in the stunning lake view.…”

How to mark the zones
- Lounge. Anchor it with an outdoor rug big enough for at least the front feet of every seat.
- Dining. Keep it closest to the kitchen door, so plates travel the shortest distance.
- Fire. Put it farthest from the house and out of the main path.
- Paths. Leave the walkway between zones, not through them.
